The Iraqi government reviewed implementation mechanisms for the One Million Agricultural Land Plots Project, a strategic initiative spanning 15 governorates to boost food security and job creation.

Key Statements and Focus Area

  • Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi emphasized “the strategic importance of this unprecedented initiative as a pivotal step toward strengthening food security, a fundamental pillar of national stability.”

  • Al-Zaidi noted that these farms “will not only increase agricultural production but also serve as a foundation for establishing agro-processing industries tailored to the crops in which each governorate specializes, based on its agricultural characteristics and comparative advantages. This approach will promote integration between agricultural production and related industries.”

Al-Zaidi convened a meeting with the Ministers of Agriculture and Water Resources, alongside his Chief of Staff, to coordinate the project's roll-out.

The meeting addressed the operational mechanisms and requirements needed to successfully implement the one-million agricultural plot initiative across 15 governorates.

He highlighted the project's role in creating jobs, revitalizing agriculture, and boosting GDP by utilizing all available arable land.

The Prime Minister explained that the project distributes agricultural land plots of 20 to 25 dunams per family, organized into adjacent clusters.

This clustered arrangement will facilitate the delivery of critical infrastructure and services like roads and electricity, while encouraging modern irrigation and advanced farming practices.

The ministers presented a comprehensive joint assessment covering available arable land, water security and irrigation mechanisms, and the technical requirements needed for implementation.

FYI

The One Million Agricultural Land Plots Project is a national initiative launched by the Iraqi government alongside the "Watan Initiative" for residential land distribution to boost food security, housing availability, and overall economic stability.

To address Iraq's historic water constraints, the agricultural project mandates a shift from traditional flooding irrigation to modern, water-saving farming systems.
