The New Generation Movement has blamed “certain political parties” for pushing the Kurdistan Region toward political collapse, declaring readiness to immediately reactivate the deadlocked parliament if rival factions show the same political will.

Key Statements and Focus Area

  • The New Generation Movement bloc in the Kurdistan Parliament stated that, “Two years have passed since the Kurdistan parliamentary elections, yet the change that the people hoped for has still not been realized.”

  • The Movement stressed that “our faction stands practically ready to reactivate the parliament right now, provided that the other parties share the same political will.”

On the anniversary of the Kurdistan parliamentary election on October 20, the New Generation Movement bloc issued a statement, noting that “the marginalized people of the Kurdistan Region headed to the ballot boxes hoping for change, in pursuit of a better and more dignified future.”

The bloc emphasized that global observers are witnessing how some political parties are driving the Kurdistan Region toward collapse “due to their refusal to relinquish positions and compromise in accordance with the election results, driving the people's livelihood into further hardship day after day.”

The statement highlighted that the public in Kurdistan has witnessed repeated attempts by the New Generation faction and the acting Speaker of Parliament to convene a session and elect the legislative leadership.

However, the ruling establishment and allied factions, who are now calling for the parliament's reactivation, were the exact entities that boycotted previous sessions, blocked a quorum, and obstructed legislative progress.

“We, in the New Generation faction, reaffirm that adherence to democratic principles and respecting the will of the citizens is the only path to serve the people and protect the Region,” the statement added.

The movement assigned complete historical accountability for the ongoing political deadlock to the parties that prioritized partisan agendas over the rule of law and public interest.

FYI

The Kurdistan Region held its long-overdue sixth parliamentary election on October 20, 2024. The final seat allocations left no single faction with an outright majority, with the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) securing 39 seats, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) winning 23 seats, and the New Generation Movement (NGM) obtaining 15 seats.

Lawmakers were officially sworn in on December 2, 2024, but the first parliamentary session collapsed immediately because factions could not agree on electing a new Speaker and Deputy Speaker.

Due to boycotts and a deliberate lack of legal quorum, the legislature has remained entirely frozen, stalling the formation of the 10th cabinet.

Government formation has hit a total standstill because of a structural power struggle.

The KDP insists that as the single largest winner, it holds the absolute electoral mandate to lead the government, retain the prime minister's office, and dictate executive leadership.

Conversely, the PUK has rejected unilateralism, demanding a "genuine partnership" and a major expansion of its roles to challenge the traditional distribution of senior executive positions.

Meanwhile, on July 2 of this year, the PUK and the New Generation Movement formalized a strategic political alliance named "Balance and Prosperity" to alter the power dynamic with the KDP.

By combining the PUK's 23 seats and the NGM's 15 seats, they created a formidable 38-seat unified bloc.

The alliance demanded senior executive positions alongside sweeping legal, financial, and socio-economic reforms to establish a transparent, true power-sharing system in the Kurdistan Region.
