  • Focus Area: Najib's transition from prison to house arrest following the royal clemency and the payment of the fine.

Najib, 73, has been imprisoned since August 2022, when Malaysia's top court upheld his conviction in a case linked to the multi-billion-dollar looting of the state investment fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad.

Malaysia's king granted him a rare royal clemency in September, allowing him to serve the rest of his graft sentence at home.

Police were stationed at his Kuala Lumpur house early Friday, and the road leading to it was blocked.

FYI

Najib served as prime minister until 2018. The 1MDB scandal, involving the looting of billions of dollars from the state investment fund, drew investigations in several countries and became one of the world's largest financial scandals.

Royal pardons in Malaysia are rare and are decided by a board chaired by the king.
