Oman’s Royal Navy evacuated 25 crew members from a Panama-flagged commercial vessel after it was targeted and caught fire off Musandam on Friday.
The incident occurred about 1.6 nautical miles from the Omani coast, according to the Maritime Security Centre.
The crew received medical care, but authorities did not identify those responsible or provide details about the extent of the damage.
The incident comes amid conflicting US and Iranian statements over sea mines and the safety of commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
Oman’s Royal Navy evacuated 25 crew members from a Panama-flagged commercial vessel after it was targeted and caught fire off the coast of Musandam, as maritime security concerns persist around the Strait of Hormuz.
The Omani Maritime Security Centre said the Royal Navy carried out the evacuation in coordination with the centre and provided the crew with necessary medical care.
Authorities have not publicly identified those responsible for targeting the vessel or specified the nature of the attack. The extent of the damage and the status of the fire were not immediately disclosed.
US Central Command (CENTCOM) said on October 28 that internationally recognized primary transit routes through the Strait of Hormuz had been cleared of sea mines and remained clear.
Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps spokesman Hossein Mohebi challenged the US statement, calling for independent evidence to support the claim.
Iran has reported that several tankers struck mines in the strait. The Associated Press reported that it could not independently verify Iran’s claims.
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical international shipping route through which roughly one-fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas supplies normally pass. Disruptions to maritime traffic can affect energy shipments, shipping costs and global markets.
Oman’s Royal Navy evacuated 25 crew members from a Panama-flagged commercial vessel on Friday after the ship was targeted and caught fire about 1.6 nautical miles off the coast of Musandam, the country’s Maritime Security Centre said.
The navy coordinated the operation with the centre and provided the crew with medical care. Officials released no further details about the attack, including the identity of those responsible, the extent of the damage or whether the fire had been extinguished.
The incident comes amid a series of maritime security concerns in and around the Strait of Hormuz, where Iran and the United States have issued conflicting accounts of the safety of shipping routes and the status of naval mines.
CENTCOM said this week that US forces had cleared the internationally recognized primary transit routes of sea mines. Mohebi, speaking for Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps, challenged that assertion and demanded independent evidence.
Iran has also reported that commercial tankers struck mines while using routes it considers unauthorized. The Associated Press said it could not independently verify those claims. The available information does not establish that a sea mine caused the fire aboard the vessel off Musandam.
The wider dispute follows restrictions imposed by Iran on maritime traffic since the US-Israeli war with Iran began on February 28. Washington has also imposed a blockade on Iranian ports and supported maritime operations intended to maintain commercial shipping through the strategic waterway.
On October 25, CENTCOM said US forces had helped Gulf partners export more than 1.5 billion barrels of crude oil through the Strait of Hormuz since the summer. The US military has described its operations as efforts to maintain freedom of navigation, while Iran maintains that vessels using certain routes require its authorization.
The incident highlights the risks facing commercial shipping around the Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint of major importance to global energy supplies. Although Oman’s evacuation operation brought all 25 crew members ashore for medical care, the circumstances of the attack remain unclear.
The competing US and Iranian statements on mine clearance underscore the difficulty of independently assessing maritime security claims amid the wider conflict. Until authorities establish the cause of the fire and identify those responsible, the incident should not be attributed to a specific actor or confirmed as a mine strike.
