A tragic plane crash in Brazil's São Paulo state on Friday claimed the lives of all 62 people on board, including 58 passengers and four crew members.

The aircraft, an ATR 72-500 operated by Voepass, was en route from Cascavel in Paraná state to São Paulo’s Guarulhos International Airport when it crashed in the city of Vinhedo.

Local media broadcast harrowing images of the plane nosediving at high speed, followed by a large plume of smoke rising from the crash site, which appeared to be in a residential area. The city government of Valinhos, which assisted in the rescue and recovery efforts, confirmed the absence of any survivors in a statement to AFP.

Vinhedo, a city of around 76,000 residents located approximately 80 kilometers (50 miles) northwest of São Paulo, was the site of the disaster. Cascavel Mayor Leonardo Paranhos expressed grief over the 62 lives lost, describing the incident as a "tragedy for us all." He also noted that services were being offered to support the families of the victims.

The bodies of the victims have been taken to the morgue, according to Vinhedo city officials. Before an official death toll was announced, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva addressed the incident during an event, acknowledging that it appeared there were no survivors and called for a moment of silence.

Voepass confirmed the crash of flight 2283 in a statement, though the exact cause of the accident remains unclear. ATR, the Franco-Italian aircraft manufacturer and Airbus subsidiary, reported that its experts were assisting with the investigation.

Witnesses described the crash as a horrifying event. Nathalie Cicari, who lives near the crash site, recounted hearing a loud noise and seeing the plane spiraling out of control. She evacuated her home, which quickly filled with black smoke. Another witness, Ricardo Rodrigues, described seeing numerous bodies at the scene.

Emergency responders, including firefighters, military police, and state civil defense, were promptly deployed to the site. Local authorities reported that the crash did not result in additional casualties on the ground, and the fire triggered by the crash was successfully contained. The aircraft involved in the crash had first flown in April 2010, according to planespotters.net.
