Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi has approved the shipment of subsidized heating oil to the Kurdistan Region, with the first batch expected this week and distribution set to begin in mountainous areas.

Key Statements and Focus Area

  • Federal Support: “In support of our beloved people in the Kurdistan Region with the onset of the winter season, Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi has instructed that heating oil quotas be allocated to our citizens at a subsidized rate.” — Iraqi Ministry of Oil.

  • Distribution Procedures: “Minister of Oil Basim Mohammed has instructed the Oil Products Distribution Company to expedite all necessary procedures to supply the allocated fuel quota.” — Iraqi Ministry of Oil.

  • Focus Area: The federal government’s allocation aims to provide households in the Kurdistan Region with heating fuel at subsidized prices ahead of winter.

On Saturday, October 31, Iraqi parliament member Srwa Mohammed told Channel8 that the first phase of the federal government’s 100-million-liter allocation was scheduled for shipment this week. She said distribution would begin in mountainous areas. The announcement follows the start of subsidized kerosene distribution in other Iraqi governorates more than a week ago.

The federal government sells subsidized heating oil to households at 150 IQD per liter. A 200-liter barrel therefore costs 30,000 IQD.

In the Kurdistan Region, the same quantity currently costs households between 100,000 and 105,000 IQD, according to the information provided.

FYI

Kerosene is widely used by households for heating during Iraq’s colder months, particularly in areas where other heating options are limited. Mountainous parts of the Kurdistan Region typically face colder winter conditions, making the timing and distribution of heating fuel an important seasonal concern.
